Hello!

My name is Lauren Surface, and I am a senior Public Health major from Charleston, South Carolina. My time at Carolina has been nothing short of amazing and has set me up for future success at the Medical University of South Carolina this fall. I am so sad my time at Carolina is ending, but I am excited to take the things I have learned during my time here into nursing school at MUSC. During my time at USC, I found myself to be a very involved student. I have been a member of my sorority, Alpha Xi Delta, for all three years here at Carolina. During this time I served as chaplain, a new member orientation leader, and lastly on our executive board as Member Development Vice President. As Member Development Vice President I was head of academics, ritual, the new member orientation program, as well as chapter programming. My experience in Greek life added so much value to my college experience and taught me so much about myself. Along with the roles I served in I participated in community service, worked with Autism Speaks, and gained lifelong friendships along the way. Another experience that has shaped my college years and helped me find my passion for working with children was my job at Charleston County School District's after-school program. I also was able to travel extensively during my college years to countries such as Uganda, Ireland, England, and more. During the summer of 2018, I was able to do a month-long internship in Jinja, Uganda for a non-profit called HEAL Ministries. I was able to shadow a volunteer nurse there and discovered I wanted to work in maternal and child health as a nurse someday. All of my unique experiences and leadership roles are what led me to chose the pathway of Professional and Civic Engagement. I am so excited to share pieces of my experiences with you through my e-portfolio!
